What is the Go Girlz Community Initiative?

The Go Girlz Community Initiative is a program the Women’s Resource Center at the University of Utah developed over the past five years to target underserved populations, primarily minority, first generation, economically disadvantaged female students, grades 7-12, in the Salt Lake City school district, with the goal of early exposure to higher education.
We view Go Girlz as an early intervention, early recruitment effort to address not only the goal of educating young women who have historically fallen through the cracks of public education, but also to address the stated goal of the University of Utah to recruit and retain women and minority students.
Who Can Participate?

In addition to working with middle school girls to provide programming that addresses early preparation for college and exposure to the University of Utah, we work with female high school students from across the Salt Lake valley. Essentially, if a high school student can arrange for their transportation to The University campus, they can take advantage of the services and programming that is offered by the Go Girlz Community Initiative.
Why Participate?
Participating in Go Girlz is really fun and is meant to advocate for you as a young woman and a developing scholar. By participating in our program you start to learn the skills that are necessary to be successful in school. Our program goal is to advocate and provide services for young women who dream of attending a higher education institution but do not necessarily know the process of how to achieve their goal. In short, we are your supporters and guides to help you realize your personal and academic goals.
Services Provided

We work on multiple forms of academic preparation, tutoring/mentoring by currently enrolled University of Utah students from various disciplines, racial/ethnics groups and socio-economic backgrounds. This early involvement in academic and personal skills prepares these potential students for success and the potential to thrive on the University campus. We guide high school students through the academic preparation and application process at the University of Utah.
Where?
Location, location, location
We work with our middle school students at Bryant Middle School in Salt Lake City.
We work primarily with high school students from the entire Salt Lake valley, the only pre-requisite being that the student can negotiate transportation to the University of Utah. We will reimburse UTA tokens if necessary.
