Institutional TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language

Introduction

The TOEFL is a test published by Educational Testing Service (ETS).  It is used to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English.  Thousands of universities and colleges in the United States and Canada require it for admission.  It is also required by many government organizations, scholarship programs, licensing or certification agencies, as well as English speaking schools overseas.

The Institutional version of the TOEFL is a multiple choice, paper-based test. There are three sections; Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension. It is accepted at the University of Utah as an alternative to the computer-based National TOEFL which is used for International Student Admissions.

The advantages of the Institutional TOEFL are that it is less expensive, and it is less intimidating to individuals who are not experienced with computers.  The disadvantages are that it is offered less often than the National TOEFL, and the results are only valid at the institution where the test is taken.

Besides being used for admissions, the Institutional TOEFL is also used by the English Language Institute to gage the progress of its students.

The current fee is $60.00.

Registering

Candidates who desire to take this test must preregister and pay the $60.00 fee in the Testing Center prior to the deadline for the test date they desire.  There is no late registration and no standby admission to the test.

Preparing

The ETS website contains sample questions and tips.  (Go to www.ets.org and enter the words "Institutional TOEFL" in the search box.) Study guides may also be purchased at most major bookstores, including the University Campus Store.  The English Language Institute offers preparatory classes, as does Salt Lake Community High School's Horizonte program.  Study tapes and books may be accessed at the Marriott Library Reference Desk.  And, the Speech Language Audiology Clinic offers therapy to help improve speaking ability.  (see contacts list below)

Taking the Test

Candidates should arrive early and present proper photo identification, such as a passport, green card, University of Utah student ID, or a US drivers license.  No one will be allowed to take the test without proper photo identification.  This rule is strictly enforced.

The test is given in a single session lasting about 2 hours.  There are three sections, including Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension.

Location

Unless informed otherwise, the test is administered in the Warnock Engineering Building (WEB).  The room assignments are posted on the front door of that building.

Scores

Scores are reported only to the International Admissions Office and the English Language Institute.  They are not valid anywhere else.  Candidates receive an individual score report about a month after taking the test.  The Examine Handbook supplied by the Testing Center contains score interpretation information.
