Institutional TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language

Introduction

The TOEFL is a test published by Educational Testing Service (ETS).  It is used to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English.  Thousands of universities and colleges in the United States and Canada require it for admission.  It is also required by many government organizations, scholarship programs, licensing or certification agencies, as well as English speaking schools overseas.

The Institutional version of the TOEFL is a multiple choice, paper-based test. There are three sections; Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension. It is accepted at the University of Utah as an alternative to the computer-based National TOEFL which is used for International Student Admissions.

The advantages of the Institutional TOEFL are that it is less expensive, and it is less intimidating to individuals who are not experienced with computers.  The disadvantages are that it is offered less often than the National TOEFL, and the results are only valid at the institution where the test is taken.

Besides being used for admissions, the Institutional TOEFL is also used by the English Language Institute to gage the progress of its students.
