Students who intend to enroll in a German, French, or Spanish course at the first or second years level at the University of Utah and who have previously studied the same language
elsewhere (in high school or at another university or college) must first complete the placement exam.
Those students who have never studied the language before may be enrolled in any first quarter section (101) of a language class without taking the exam.
Why: The placement exam ensures that students will enroll in the course that best suits their level of ability and that students share similar knowledge in any given language course. It
therefore helps make language classes an enjoyable experience for both the student and the
instructor.
Where: You may take the placement exam at:
112 Orson Spencer Hall (Language Resource Center)
When: 9-4, Monday thru Friday
Regular school days only.
Hours are subject to change.
How:
-
Pay the placement exam fee of $10.00 at the Department of Languages & Literature, 1400 Languages and
Communication Building. You will get a receipt and your password which is valid for a single administration of the test.
-
Go to 112 OSH, show the receipt and a valid picture ID (driver's license, University ID) to the lab consultant on
duty. You will be directed to a computer where you will take the test. Your personal password must be entered to take
the test. Your score will be displayed on the screen at the end of the test.
-
Write the score on your receipt. Ask for the Placement Chart to identify the course for which you are eligible.
You may not enroll in any other course. The Department of Languages and Literature maintains a record and checks
the placement for each student.
-
Please bring the test receipt (yellow copy) with the score to the first class session to
turn in to your instructor.
Note: The placement exam can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes. You should allow about 90
minutes to complete the whole process.
Students who possess advanced language ability, and who do not want to take a language
class, may take
the MLA test instead of the Language
Placement test in order to obtain credit for the language ability they already possess.
