In-Absentia
Testing in the Absence of the Instructor
Introduction
The general policy for class testing at the University of Utah is for instructors to
administer tests themselves during class, or at the time set aside during finals week. The Testing Center provides a
limited back-up service to
this whereby it administers tests as needed, in behalf of (in the absence of) the
instructor, to a small amount of students in its facility. This service is called
"In-Absenting" testing, and it is particularly valuable for those occasions when students are unable to test with the rest of their
class due to illness, outside activities, etc.
There are some departments, however, who regularly use In-Absentia testing for more than just
make-up tests. The following are the most common examples:
Besides these, In-Absentia testing is also used by students from other universities who need
to take a test while they are in Salt Lake City. The Consortium of College Testing Centers
is an organization which helps such students locate testing facilities all around the country.
Making Arrangements
Students who desire to use the In-Absentia testing service must first make arrangements with
their instructor or department. They then need to print out an Academic Test Request and follow the
instructions it contains.
Cost
The Testing Center charges $5.00 per
test originating within the University of Utah system, and $20.00 per test
originating from an outside organization. This price represents the basic
rate, and may be adjusted upward for more complicated tests. It also
does not include the cost of postage required to return the exam. It
is expected that the student or the outside organization sending the exam
pay for the postage. Students are expected to pay all fees at the time of the examination. Some
University of Utah departments absorb this cost for
their students, most do not.
Schedule
In-Absentia testing is conducted during University Paper-Based
testing hours. No appointment is required. Students simply must arrive early enough to finish their test before
closing. The primary exception to this policy is when a computer is
needed to take the exam. In this case, candidates are advised to
make an appointment in advance by calling 801-581-8733.
Taking the Test
Students must show photo identification (such as a drivers license or student i.d. card)
before they will be allowed to take any test. If a calculator or blue book is required for an exam, it is the students responsibility to
supply these items.
Scores
Tests are sent back to the instructors for scoring. The Testing Center has nothing to
do with it.
