ACT - Residual
American College Test - Residual Version

Purpose Most colleges require either the ACT or SAT for admission.  The University of Utah will accept either one.
Explanation The ACT comes in two versions, Residual and National.  Both versions are produced by the same company, and they are essentially the same test.  The most important difference is that the Residual ACT is only valid at the school where it is taken and scored.

The advantages of taking the Residual ACT at the University of Utah are the following:

  • It is given more often.
  • It is easier to register for it.
  • The scores are available sooner.

The disadvantages of taking the Residual ACT are:

  • It costs more money.
  • It is only valid where it is taken.
Cost $40.00
Schedule Thursdays, at 10:00 a.m.
The test usually ends around 2:00 p.m.  It is not given in October, on holidays, or during any other official University break.
Location Testing Center, Room 498 of the Student Services Building
Registration Candidates must pre-register and pay for the test at least one day in advance.  This can be done in person by coming into the Testing Center, or over the telephone with a credit card by calling (801) 581-8733.  Space is limited, so it is best to register as soon as possible before all the available slots are taken.
Identification Photo Identification (drivers license, school I.D. card, passport, etc.) is required for admittance to the test.
Calculators A basic calculator is permitted, but not necessary.  (A Texas Instruments TI-86 or lower is acceptable.)  Candidates must supply their own.  Programmable, printing, and QWERTY keyboard calculators are not permitted.
Scores A score report print-out will be available within one week of testing.  (Generally you actually receive the print-out immediate following the exam.)  The results are only valid at the University of Utah.
Preparation Study guides are available at most bookstores and libraries.  Preparatory classes are taught by the University of Utah's Youth Education Office, telephone: (801) 581-6984.
Retakes Candidates must wait 60 days before retaking the Residual ACT, but may take the National ACT immediately.
