Rock Climbing

Orientation Team

The Outdoor Orientation Program is a unique wilderness experience offered to incoming first-year students admitted for the Fall semester. We invite you to come visit the University of Utah and the outdoors in a variety of settings. You will interact with other incoming students who also possess an interest in the outdoors. While on campus, you will become familiar with the layout of our campus and the processes involved with being a student at the University of Utah.  We will venture into the outdoors with the opportunity to explore the Wasatch Mountains through participation in river running, rock climbing, and day hiking. We will also spend a night camping as a group in the famous Cottonwood Canyons.  The Outdoor Orientation experience is for everyone. The trips are designed for all levels of experience; complete novices as well as skilled mountaineers will find the trips rewarding and fun. After going on the outdoor adventures, students will spend time at the Residence Halls and receive an extended introduction to the University of Utah from the Orientation staff. This includes meeting with an academic advisor, creating a class schedule, and registering for classes.

Trips

Peruvian Gulch Hike

Peruvian Gulch

Participants of the Outdoor Orientation will be hiking one of many beautiful trails that Utah’s canyons have to offer. Participants will be exposed to the different terrains and at the top of the trail, a beautiful view of the Utah valley from the Great Salt Lake to Utah Lake will appear and take your breath away.

Big Cottonwood Rock Climbing

Hiking Crew

This Outdoor Orientation will take students to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon to explore local rock and boulders that are fit to climb, just 15 minutes from the University of Utah. This is designed for beginner climbers, but more advanced climbers will enjoy the different terrain. We’ll set up a couple of top ropes and have instructors give us tips in climbing technique. Then students will face the crag head-on, with safety always of first importance.

Weber River Boating

Yampa Raft

This is a great introduction to white water boating. Starting high in the Uinta mountains of Utah, the Weber River provides an exciting ride as it weaves through a beautiful red mudstone canyon with pine trees, great history, and fanciful rock formations. Students will run the Weber River in inflatable kayaks. All participants must be able to swim, and feel comfortable in moving water. All safety equipment will be provided.
