Internet and Computer Gaming Addiction
What is Internet and Video Gaming Addiction?
In research conducted over the past years, psychologists across the country have theorized that it is possible to become addicted to the Internet. The addiction has been named Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD).
To be diagnosed with IAD, an individual must meet three or more of the criteria set by the American Psychological Association. These criteria include:
- developing a tolerance to the Internet
- increasing Internet usage steadily
- developing withdrawal symptoms
- surfing the Internet for longer than was intended
- socially isolating oneself from friends or family members.
Video game addiction or video game overuse, is described as a form of psychological addiction composed of a compulsive use of computer and video games. This is a new type of addiction that is waiting for official recognition from the American Medical Association; it is certainly a growing problem among college students.
Instead of spending times with friends, some students can find themselves in darkened rooms, slaying monsters, stealing cars, running in for the game winning touchdown and otherwise living out every fantasy they ever had for hours on end.
The ability to create an alternate world was a refreshing break from the routine of student life. While hard-core gamers insist their favorite activity is a harmless pastime, their loved ones sometimes suspect that their hobby has turned into something a little more compulsive.
While the subject of video game addiction is a relatively new one (video game addiction is being recognized as a problem by more clinics and doctors every year), it is recognized as one of the top ten reasons students fail or receive a poor grade in a class at the University of Utah.
