Program Information

Study Site

Participants will take courses at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. Kiel is a modern city on a beautiful inlet of the Baltic Sea, near the Danish border. Berlin, Amsterdam, or Copenhagen are within easy distance, and an overnight boat trip takes you to Oslo. Many water sports are available, including sailing and windsurfing.    More information on can be found at the Official National Tourism website.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of 5 weeks of intensive study of German language, literature, and culture, offered at all levels at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. Students are in class approximately 24 hours a week. Students may also take advantage of the German tutors offered through the university. The tutors help students with their class work but also organize activities such as a cooking class, a picnic at the local park, or dinner at a traditional German restaurant.

Students who have completed at least one semester of German (German 1010 or the equivalent) are eligible to participate in the Kiel program. Depending on their level of German, students may take up to two courses (typically 6 U of U credits) for a grade, credit/no credit, or audit.  Advanced courses (3000 level and above) may be applied towards major or minor requirements.  Also, successful completion of the Kiel study abroad program fulfills the University of Utah's International Requirement.
