Program Information
Study Site
Art in Europe: Prints and Printmaking and Drawing Travel Sketch Book, will be based around the four European cities: London, Amsterdam, Prague, and Budapest. The program will also include possible side trips to nearby towns. No previous experience in art is required.
Each of these cities is an artistic and cultural center and home to an extensive and diverse selection of galleries and museums. London, the economic heartbeat of Europe, has numerous museums and galleries, particularly the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Tate Modern. A day trip to Oxford is planned while in London. While in Amsterdam, trips to the Rembrant House Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijks Museum will be part of the course schedule. Prague, though not as large as London and Amsterdam, also has numerous museums to offer, as well as a comprehensive overview of European architectural history. Budapest, a beautiful city situated on the river Danube, will include the Ludwig Museum of contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and many others.
Curriculum
Prints and Printmaking
Prints and Printmaking will examine a broad range of Western European artwork, with specific exposure to the varied printmaking traditions that are unique to these countries. Coursework will include discussions, attendance at exhibitions, presentations in print study rooms, and field trips. Students will take short quizzes over the relevant subject matter and will be required to give a presentation and write papers.
Drawing Travel Sketch Book
The Drawing course will be based on creating a travel sketchbook. Instruction will be given on how to apply a range of technical and creative skills needed to sketch architecture, interiors, street scenes, people, and landscapes. Students will also have the opportunity to sketch from a variety of artworks in major museums and galleries throughout the course. Grading will be based on students’ successful demonstration of skills learned in each topic area covered, and on the overall finished travel sketchbook.
