Univeristy of Neuchâtel, Switzerland

Neuchatel

The University of Neuchâtel is settled in a beautiful landscape of lake and mountains that offers a friendly atmosphere to about 3,500 students.  The city of Neuchâtel belongs to the "French part" of Switzerland and is a rather small city at the border of the German part of the country.  The university offers four academic disciplines: humanities, science, theology, and law and economics. Universität Rostock, Germany

City of Rostock

Rostock, a Baltic seaport of 200,000 people, is the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg, in Eastern Germany.  The city is 750 years old and was once a member of the Hanseatic League.  Trade, shipbuilding, and fishing have made Rostock into the city it is today.  The city is filled with Mediaeval Gothic architecture.  Just outside lies the seaside resort of Warnemunde which has broad sandy beaches and grassy dunes.

The Universität Rostock, the first university in the Baltic region, was founded in 1419.  It has a student enrollment of 10,000.  Students can choose from almost fifty different courses of study and further refine their choice by selecting interdisciplinary and specialist classes in new areas where different subjects meet.  The university is a world leader in the fields of medical technology, bio-materials, and the development of artificial organs.  For more information, visit their website.


Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Germany

Heidelberg

Heidelberg has charmed visitors with its heady romantic atmosphere since its founding in 1386.  The cityscape is dominated by the old castle, which is situated on the bluff of a hill at a bend in the Neckar River.  Eleven museums, numerous private art galleries, theatres, and festivals make this one of the most exciting cities in Germany.  Heidelberg is the perfect base from which to explore the neighboring region of the Blackforest, or the wine growing area of the Mosel valley.

Ruprecht-Karls-Universität is the oldest university in Germany.  Dating back to 1386 it was the third to be established in the Holy Roman Empire.  Approximately eleven percent of the enrollment of 30,000 students is from overseas.  Surveys conducted by the media found that Heidelberg is attractive to both German and foreign students for its high academic standards.  The atmosphere of the city and the university offers a unique combination which is hard to resist.  Participants may select courses from a number of faculties including: modern languages, medicine, philosophy, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, chemistry, pharmacology, biology, geosciences, physics, astronomy, economics, law, archaeology, theology, and oriental studies.  "Reason will flourish and human understanding be enriched," is the philosophy which guides the university of Heidelberg.  For more information, visit their website.


Universität Stuttgart, Germany

City of Stuttgart

Stuttgart is the state capital of Baden-Württemberg located in the southwest of Germany.  This lively and exciting city is surrounded by a wonderful panorama of rolling green hills, forests and vineyards.  Many of the most renowned companies, including Daimler Chrysler, Porsche, and IBM have their headquarters here. Stuttgart is also the cultural center in southwestern Germany with a wealth of museums, theatres and concert halls.  Conveniently located, Stuttgart is an ideal base for excursions to the Black Forest, Lake Constance and neighboring Austria, Switzerland and France.

Universität Stuttgart hosts about 15,000 students and 140 institutes in fourteen departments ranging from architecture, natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, history, languages, philosophy, social sciences, and almost all of the engineering sciences.  It is one of the oldest technical universities and has been repeatedly ranked among the very top universities in Germany.  The university closely co-operates with industry as well as with various large research institutions such as the Fraunhofer-Society for Production Engineering, the Baden-Württemberg Materials Testing Centre and the German Aerospace Research Institute.  Universität Stuttgart is truly a future-oriented place for research and advanced education.  Completion of German 2020 or equivialent is required for this program. 

Before school starts in the beginning of October students can participate in a 4-week-intensive German language course at Universität Stuttgart.

An orientation seminar follows the intensive German course.  This seminar offers regional information as well as a general introduction to studying at the Universität Stuttgart.  It also includes specialised academic advising for international students.  The seminar concludes with a one-day excursion.

Ludwig Maximilians Universität Munich, Germany

MunichMunich is the capital and cultural center of the state of Bavaria, found in the south of Germany, about 50 km north of the northern edge of the Alps.  The city was completely rebuilt after US occupation in 1945, and its residents now enjoy a thriving economy and high quality of life.  Being a major European cultural center, Munich has world-class museums, handsome parks and architecture, and a rambunctious arts scene.  Munich is the ideal place to experience German city life.

Ludwig Maximilians Universität Munich is one of the most internationally renowned research universities in Germany.  LMU is a large university that offers a wide range of courses from about 150 subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, History, Cultural Sciences, Religious Studies, Business Administration, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, and Mathematics.  LMU is unique in allowing students to combine studies in the sciences with studies in the humanities in order to form a more rounded degree program.  Around 47,000 students attend LMU with about 8,000 being international students.  Students enjoy the benefits of a large university and take advantage of the multiple libraries, research institutes and centers, and museums associated with LMU.  Students also often gather in restaurants and cafes, well known for authentic Bavarian food and drink, surrounding the university to meet friends and relax after class.  LMU is perfect for any student looking for a university with academic excellence in a bustling metropolis.

Nankai University, China

Shanghai Normal University, China

Shanghai Normal University boasts two beautiful campuses at the south-west of Shanghai and at the north in Feng Xian along the Hangzhou Bay respectively.  Shanghai Normal University was founded in 1954. Over the last fifty years, the university has developed from a teachers college into a comprehensive university which offers a large variety of disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education science, literature, history, natural science, engineering, agriculture and management science.  Classes are offered primarly in Chinese, although some courses in English may be available.  For more information about Shanghai Normal University, visit their website.

The Governor Huntsman International Scholarship is available for one University of Utah student per year to study for a semester at Shanghai Normal.  The scholarship will cover travel expenses to and from China, tuition, books, and living expenses for the semester. The deadline to apply for Spring 2009 is October 3, 2008.

Sichuan University, China

Sichuan University is located in Chengdu, Sichuan and offers a wide range of disciplines in the field of liberal arts, science, economics, and management for students with proficiency in Mandarin. Shinshu University, Japan

Shinshu

Shinshu University is in Nagano Prefecture, which is located in the center of Japan about 2.5 hours from Tokyo.  Nagano is reputed to have Japan's best mountain resorts, and Nagano City was the home for the 1998 Winter Olympics.   Shinshu University is a national university known throughout Japan.  It is recognized as one of the top 30 universities in Japan in terms of education and research.  The university offers intensive Japanse language courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as courses taught in English and Japanese in a variety of majors.   You can learn more about Shinshu on their website.


Gifu University, Japan

The breathtaking prefecture of Gifu is the heartland of Japan. Gifu is only 20 minutes by bullet train from Nagoya, two hours from Tokyo and one hour from Kyoto.  It has a population of 410,000 and is widely known for its many temples, a vast array of performing arts, fine arts, open air food markets, and especially, traditional festivals.  Gifu Prefecture is frequently called a "Festival Kingdom," as there is usually one being held somewhere almost every day.  The prefecture also has more hot springs, or insen, than anywhere else in Japan.

The Faculty of Education offers a wide variety of classes for student with proficiency in Japanese — from philosophy to art; from geography to music; they also have a large selection of health and recreation classes (April or October Admission). Students learning Japanese can enroll in the Japanese Language & Culture Studies Program (October admission only).   Gifu University also has a very active International Exchange Club which arranges activities for foreign students. Waseda University, Japan

Waseda University is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan and is often referred to as the "Princeton of Japan" with an enrollment of over 50,000 students from fifty-nine different countries.  It is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian institution of higher learning located in Tokyo.  Waseda and the University of Utah became sister schools in October 2000.  The program runs from October through June. Participants can be considered with a basic knowledge of the Japanese language.  Lectures focus on Japan’s culture, society and economy, Asian civilization and international studies and are taught in English.  The discipline/topic range is fairly extensive with a choice of over forty courses taught each semester.  Also offered is the possibility of a directed seminar or independent study options. Ajou University, South Korea

Ajou

Suwon is an old capital city with a long history, surrounded by the picturesque Suwon Hwasong Fortress.  A beautiful city with a population of 900,000, it is located twenty miles from Seoul, the world’s tenth largest city.  Ajou University provides an academic and residential atmosphere with harmoniously arranged classrooms, laboratories, residence halls and recreational and cultural facilities on its 125 acre campus.  Suwon is a beautiful place where ancestors used to chant the beauty of the eight Great Scenes. Many cultural assets are scattered here and there in Suwon. There are many government and public offices including Kyonggi-do Provincial Headquarters and many high-tech industrial facilities like Samsung Eletronics and Sunkyong Company.

Ajou University is well recognized as a model educational institution of higher learning and has consistently stood out among the best universities in Korea ranking overall among the top ten.  The university and the surrounding communities offer a rich educational and recreational environment with the unique cultural and historical monuments.  Courses are offered in area studies, business, chemistry, computer science, communications, economics, engineering (chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental and urban, mechanical, industrial, material), international relations, literature, languages and linguistics, nursing, physics, political science, sociology, Korean studies, statistics, philosophy, and psychology.

University of Incheon, South Korea

Brisk salt air mixed with the buzz of an international city, Incheon on the Yellow Sea effortlessly fuses the energy of the young generation with the traditions of the old.  It is a town of land and sea, islands and harbor. There are opportunities to experience theatre, art events, history, the outdoors, and the exciting trade atmosphere of one of Asia’s busiest ports.  In addition, Incheon is only half an hour from Seoul, and with the opening of the new international airport Incheon becomes Korea’s gateway to the rest of Asia and the World.

The program is designed to help foreign students gain insight to the workings of Korea’s economy and culture.  It provides the scope for students to experience business life in Korea firsthand while making valuable contacts for the future.  The CONAS center (the College of Northeast Asia Studies) is a state-of-the-art facility built in conjunction with the Daewoo Corporation.  It has a library, computer labs, dormitories, language labs, a health center, and cafeteria.  The classes at CONAS include course work in Korean Language, Culture, History, Trade Policy, Multinational Corporate Strategy, the Korean Economic System, and Financial Markets.  An internship can be arranged at a Korean company. 

Students are housed in new dormitories on the Incheon campus.  The dorms provide a study environment as well as a chance to meet people and exchange cultural ideas.  CONAS has special scholarships to make housing for U.S. students very affordable; inquire with your study abroad advisor about these opportunities.

Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS), Mexico

Located in the coastal city of La Paz, Mexico, UABCS is ideally situated for students to experience the charm of Baja Mexico.  Known for its beaches and water sports (snorkeling, kayaking, sport-fishing), La Paz is a popular tourist destination for North Americans, and an idyllic location for study.  UABCS is a public institution offering a variety of courses taught in Spanish in the Humanities, Marine Biology, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, and Agriculture.  Students select their own off-campus housing, usually living with a host family or in an apartment.  For more information, please visit their website.

Universidad de Oviedo
The University of Oviedo, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Spain, was founded in 1574 and began its teaching activities in 1608. It is currently celebrating its 400th anniversary. The University has a student population of around 34,000 and offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in a variety of fields ranging from the Humanities and Social Sciences to Business, Engineering and Health Sciences.

The city of Oviedo is the capital and cultural center of the Principality of Asturias. It is a fairly compact and very walkable city of around 225,000 people. It has a charming old section that dates back to the VIII century and features a beautiful gothic cathedral. It is located in the geographical center of the region within a short distance from the coast to the North and the mountains to the South. The city is well connected by air with direct flights to a number of major European cities. France, Portugal and most of Spain can be reached by car in less than 7 hours.
