Study Site
Santa Fe is strategically located in the center of Argentina, along what is called the fluvial industrial axis of the country. Important Argentinean cities are just a few hours away by car, bus or train: Cordoba, Corrientes, Rosario and Buenos Aires (the national capital). Argentina is a very unique country in South America that combines a clear Latin American flavor with a strong Southern European (i.e., Spanish, Italian and French) accent. Santa Fe was founded by the Spaniards in the 16th Century and the marks of this colonial heritage can still be felt now. Santa Fe's main activities today are based on the provincial government, higher education (there are three universities in Santa Fe), tourism, and commerce.
The Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) was founded in 1919 and is one of the most prestigious State Universities in Argentina. It has 26,500 students, offers fifty-three degrees and is home of fifteen different Colleges, Schools and Institutes including Architecture, Law, Chemical Engineering, Arts & Music, Informatics, and Mathematics. Students who participate in the exchange may do so Spring or Summer Semesters—anytime from April 20th until August 20th.

The Exchange
The UNL and the University of Utah have conducted academic exchanges since June 1995 based on a signed exchange agreement. The program has generated twenty exchange projects involving forty-one individuals from both institutions, including twenty-six students, seven faculty and six scholars. Professor Julio Bermudez is the coordinator of the exchange at the University of Utah whereas Professor Julio Arroyo does at the UNL. Although most of the people involved have come from Architecture, individuals from other disciplines have also participated.
Language
Students are not required to speak Spanish. However, a working or rough knowledge of Spanish is encouraged. If no language is available, students are associated with UNL faculty and students fluent in English.
Climate
The exchange occurs during Autumn-Winter in Santa Fe. April and May are mild (60's F). June and July may get cold and rainy (low 40's F even 30's F during the day). Since Argentina is a large country, weather conditions will vary from hot (northeast) to very cold (Patagonia).
Extension of Visit
Stay usually extends for about ten weeks. Student often need to complete some assignments at their return to Utah. Shorter periods of time (i.e., four to five weeks) could be arranged depending on interest, availability and number of credits.
Housing
Students may stay at a two or three bedroom apartment. This apartment would cost around $200 per month. The UNL also provides very reasonable and cheap accommodations for about $100 per month.
