Opportunities for International Students

Events for International Students:  A list of upcoming social and cultural events recommended for International Students by the ISC and the International Center.

International Student Council

The International Student Council (ISC) is a club designed to meet some of the social needs of international students.  Members of the council come from many different nations and organize regular activities for the international community (such as International Week, International Night, a Halloween Party, etc). The ISC also organizes seminars on immigration topics to keep students informed of the rules and regulations.

Additionally, each year the ISC and the international community organize a fun-filled International Night in March to share the cultures of the world with the U of U community.

You can join the ISC e-mail list to get announcements from the ISC and the famous "Weekly Events" calendar that gives you ideas on what to do on the weekends on campus and in Salt Lake City.

The Ambassador Program

The Ambassador Program is a great way to find out more about the world you live in. It offers valuable opportunities for both American Students and International Students to engage in cross cultural interactions.

How does it work?  New international students are matched with current U of U students by email a few weeks prior to the new semester.  Students email each other to ask and answer questions about each other's countries and about university life. Then during Fall Orientation, the Ambassadors and their students will meet and spend time together. The International Center organizes monthly events (hikes, tours, coffee hours etc) for everyone to meet and get to know one another throughout the year.

Why should you join?

  • If you are a student at the U of U:
  • You can be more involved in campus life, and gain valuable leadership skills
  • You will learn about the world outside the United States
  • If you are an international student and have been on campus at least one semester, you too can become an Ambassador and help new students
  • You will be representing your university and your country. You have a chance to share what you know
  • Click here if you are a U Student and wish to join!

    Friendship Family Program

There is more to education than school!  Some of the most important experiences in America will occur outside school activities.  The American people are a diverse group with many cultural differences and similarities.  The closer you look, the more you find!

The Friendship Family Program is a great opportunity for American families and international students to get together and enjoy a cross-cultural experience with each other.  Each year, new International students arrive at the University of Utah hoping to meet American families and make American Friends during their stay.  Joining the Friendship Family Program is a great way to do this.

Host families in the Friendship Family Program provide hospitality, and are willing to learn about your county and culture.  Families in the past have included their International friend in picnics, outings, community service projects, movies, performances, sports events, birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinner, holiday parties and many other fun activities!

The Friendship Family Program is a great opportunity to learn all you can about the "real" America!  Sign up now or at orientation but please note we will be matching students at the beginning of each semester- Fall semester and Spring semester so you may have to wait to be assigned a family.

International Women's Association

The International Women's Association (IWA) brings together women from all over the world.  Their aim is to help, guide, and look after the welfare of each woman.  They also provide a place for friendship and for learning about and understanding American culture.  Women students and spouses whose husbands or partners are students at the U are able to join.
