Immigration Services—Staying legal in the U.S.

Important Immigration Announcement for all International Students.

July 2003

New Policy Governing Correspondence Credits for International Students

International students will no longer be allowed to count ANY correspondence credit toward the required, minimum number of credits for which they must register each semester. Currently there is no way to list those credits on the student record - it must be tracked manually. Thus if a student has fewer regular credit hours on the system than the minimum, they will be reported to the Immigration Service as out of status. Because the penalty is now much harsher, and involves likely deportation, it is in everyone's best interest to discontinue this practice.

Students may still elect to take one correspondence course, but it will NO LONGER COUNT toward the Immigration registration requirement.

Students currently enrolled in correspondence study will be permitted to count those hours provided they complete them during the term they began the course. No new correspondence registration will be counted.
