How to choose classes Choosing your classes is one of the most important things you will do as a student. There are many graduation requirements that you need to fulfill, both University requirements and requirements for your individual degree. You also want to choose classes that you are prepared for and can succeed in. Fortunately, the University has many resources to help you make this decision. If you would like to register for classes prior to arrival, you can complete the online orientation to gain access to early registration. If you know which major you wish to pursue, you should contact an academic advisor in your department via email to help you register for the proper classes. If you have not yet decided your major, you should contact an advisor in the University College to ensure you register for the right classes. You can contact an advisor on their email helpline (uc@sa.utah.edu). For undergraduate students, there are several resources that will help you. New undergraduate students may want to read through the on-line orientation guide. This interactive orientation program may take up to 45 minutes to read. PLEASE NOTE: THIS ONLINE ORIENTATION WILL NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION! Once you arrive on campus, your best source for help with university graduation requirements is the University College (Academic Advising) office. You can meet with an advisor who will talk with you about your academic plans. The advisor knows the graduation requirements and will help you choose classes to fulfill those requirements in the necessary amount of time. During International Student Orientation there is one afternoon of academic advising sessions designed to help you understand the University system and choose the best classes for your course of study. Once you have chosen an academic major, or if you are interested in learning more about any particular major, you should meet with the Undergraduate Advisor for that department. The departmental advisor will help you know the specific classes you need to take to earn a degree in that department. They are familiar with the difficulty of each class. They will make recommendations about when to take each class, and can help you decide if you are prepared to take a certain class. Certain departments have strict guidelines about the course of study for each semester. Be sure to meet with your department's advisor to find out if your department has those requirements. For graduate students, you will want to meet with your department or program's graduate secretary or advisor as soon as you arrive in the U.S. They will tell you what classes you need to take for your degree. They will also help you plan your course of study. How
