Checks drawn on foreign accounts are usually held for fourteen days before a bank will release your money to you. So it would be a good idea to bring enough travelers checks in U.S. dollars to cover expenses for the first two weeks. Bring enough to cover your first month's rent, food, utilities, deposits, transportation and miscellaneous expenses. This could range from $1,000 to $2,000. If you are being funded by the University of Utah, you should know that paychecks are issued every two weeks and, depending on when you begin working, it may be three weeks before you receive a paycheck.
