The University of Utah International Center is excited to present you with the opportunity to learn new languages, and invite you to advance your knowledge of the languages you may already know!  The Language Exchange Program is a cooperative effort of University of Utah students and administrators.  It is an opportunity to create international contacts and develop relationships with students from different countries while improving language proficiency.

What is LEP? 
The Language Exchange Program is an opportunity for cross-cultural communication through language development.  We match non-native English speakers with native English speakers for a conversation exchange.  Through the program, one can practice a foreign language, learn about another culture, and/or gain tutoring experience. Non-native English speakers are able to practice English communication skills, learn about US culture or other English speaking cultures, and share their linguistic and cultural knowledge.  Native English speakers can be matched with individuals who speak the foreign language they are interested in learning.  It is basically a learning exchange.

How do I sign up? 
Any interested individuals can sign up.  It is free of charge.  Just stop by the International Center Office in the Student Union (Rm. 410) and fill out an interest form (available at the front desk) or fill in the interest form LEP Application Form.  This is a great opportunity for students about to go abroad on an exchange or students who just returned from a study abroad program who want to keep up with their foreign language skills.  Of course, it is also a great opportunity for international students who want to perfect their English speaking skills.

How are individuals matched together? 
Individuals are matched with LEP partners based on their language proficiency and interest.  Interested individuals will meet with each other independently on or off campus as often or as little as they choose.  This is a new program and there are many ideas in the making.  When you provide us with your e-mail, we will be able to communicate with you as new opportunities arise.

When will I hear back from the International Center about my LEP Partner? 
It will most likely take a couple of weeks for us to get the program started and partner people together.  Please be patient and feel free to check in at the International Center in Room 410 of the Student Union.
