Program Information
Program Dates 26 February - 7 March 2010
Curriculum Health professional students, faculty, and staff from the University of Utah work in conjunction with the Tandana Foundation and Ecuadorian medical professionals to provide medical care for rural communities outside of Otavalo, Ecuador. Through the creation of provisional clinics in schools and community centers, volunteers provide medical evaluations and basic medications to patients. If further follow up is required, patients are seen by an Ecuadorian doctor on the trip or given a written referral to a local provider. University of Utah students participate in the role of their perspective occupation by measuring vitals, providing physical diagnosis, distributing medications and/or giving informal health classes. Students work closely with both the U.S. and Ecuadorian staff. Because most of the Ecuadorian patients and counterparts do not speak English, the ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
For more information regarding the Tandana Foundation please visit their website.
