POSTING A WORK STUDY JOB

Restrictions:

  • A work study position cannot require the student to work more than 20 hours a

      week during the semester.  Any job posting which requires greater than 20 hours per

      week will be removed from the job list.

  • A workstudy student must be paid an hourly rate.  A work study student cannot

      be paid a commission, fee, salary or stipend.  Any posted jobs that list these types of

      compensation will be removed.

  • Hourly wages are determined by the hiring department and must be based on the

      market wage that is commensurate with the job duties and required qualifications.

      Jobs paid at a professional rate may be considered as not qualifying for a work study

      position.  Any job posting that offers a rate greater than market wage or offers

       professional level compensation will be removed from the job list.

  • Applications for work study positions are made directly to the hiring department.
  • Work study students cannot fill any job that involves:

*  Work as a political aide;

*  Partisan or non-partisan political activity;

*  Association with a faction in an election for public office;

    Lobbying;

*  The primary benefit of members of a limited membership

    organization (e.g. credit union, fraternal/religious order,

    cooperative); or

*  The construction, operation, or maintenance of any part of a

     facility used for religious worship or sectarian instruction.

  • Work study students cannot be hired in a position that would:

*  Impair existing contracts

*  Displace regular employees; or

*  Fill jobs that are vacant because of a strike.

  • Work Study funding will pay a percentage of wages up to $10 per hour. The

      employer must cover 100% of an hourly wage over $10 per hour. For example;

      work study will pay a maximum of $7.50 per hour for an on-campus work study

      student. An on-campus employer hiring a student at $11 per hour will have to pay

      $3.50 per hour - $2.50 to cover 25% of the $10 per hour maximum plus the extra

      $1  per hour which exceeds that maximum.

  • Departments hiring work study employees agree to know and follow the

      work study Information and Policy.

Suggestions:

Verify that the interviewees have work-study awards:

*Email the Work Study Coordinator (faws@sa.utah.edu)  or call at  (801)581-6581 to obtain an unofficial confirmation that the student has a work study award.  This confirmation is not a guarantee of eligibility for hire.  It serves to quickly identify applicants who have not been awarded work study funding; or

*Request a Job Referral Notice (JRN) at http://www.sa.utah.edu/finance/working/Inforjrn.htm. The JRN is an official confirmation of the student’s eligibility to begin work as a work study student.  This process may take 2 or more business days to complete.

DO NOT have a student begin working until a JRN has been issued.The hiring department must have a valid JRN before the student is hired or begins work.  Wages earned before or after the JRN authorization period will be charged 100% to the employing department and cannot be charged to work study retroactively.

Re-instatement of closed job postings or minor changes to existing job postings may be made by contacting the Work Study Coordinator (faws@sa.utah.edu).

Job postings must include a closing date.  Jobs without a closing date will not appear on the work-study job website.
