NONRESIDENT UNIVERSITY OF UTAH MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

nonresident Merit Scholarships:

Nonresident high school seniors who will be entering freshmen, and who are applying forĀ  merit and/or leadership and/or diversity scholarships, please use the online Application for General (Freshman) Scholarships form  or   (pdf form).

Available to:

Nonresident entering freshmen who are National Merit Finalists. Winners are identified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Application:

Scholarship application to the University of Utah should be made before February 1. Apply also to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by taking the required tests. Check with your high school counseling center for detailed application procedures.

Value:

A minimum of $500 per year for a maximum of 8 semesters or until the student receives a baccalaureate degree, whichever comes first. This is a cash stipend awarded in addition to any tuition waiver the student might receive from the University of Utah through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Renewal:

Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and complete 24 hours of course work (20 of which must be graded) every two semesters. Grades are reviewed after the second, fourth, and sixth semester.

Scholarship application to the University of Utah should be made before February 1. Check with your high school counseling center for detailed application procedures for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Special Conditions:

Qualification as a National Merit Semifinalist (the pool from which finalists and eventual winners are selected) is based on the results of the PSAT/NMSQT, open to all high school juniors. The test is administered in most high schools in October and must be taken in the junior year. Additionally, students must notify the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that the University of Utah is their first choice school by May of their senior year in order to be sponsored as a National Merit Scholar by the University.
