HOW TO REINSTATE FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY
CGPA Violaotion:
Students who violate the qualitative aspect of this policy must raise their cumulative grade point average at the University of Utah to a 2.0 minimum. It will be necessary for students to attend without the assistance of federal aid programs during the time in which they are attempting to raise the cumulative grade point average.
Maximum Time Frame:
If the student graduates and enters a new program, new degree time limits apply and the class level violation will be cleared upon review.
Aggregate Completion:
A student must attend and complete enough credit hours to raise his or her aggregate completion rate to 67 percent. It will be necessary for students to attend without the assistance of federal aid during the time in which they are attempting to raise the aggregate completion rate.
Term Completion:
A student must successfully attend one semester of at least half-time enrollment, at the University of Utah, without the assistance of federal aid. Successful attendance requires the successful completion of all registered courses during that semester.
Notification of Compliance by the Student:
It is the responsibility of the student to inform the Financial Aid Office once eligibility is reestablished. The student may do this by submitting a written memo, or by meeting with a counselor. In either case, the counselor will verify the student’s compliance before reinstating federal aid eligibility. If, through the course of reviewing a student’s file, a counselor identifies that a student is eligible, the SAT holds may be removed without notification from the student.
Eligibility Reestablished Prior to Notification from Student:
A student becomes eligible for aid as soon as he or she has satisfied the above requirements. However, if notification from a student is received after the term, in which the student reinstated eligibility, aid may not be applied retroactively to that semester. An appeal may not award aid retroactively to a term in which the student did not meet the SAT Standards.
Reestablishing Eligibility - Extenuating Circumstance:
A student who does not comply with the SAT standards, but believes that there were exceptional circumstances beyond his or her control that impeded his or her ability to maintain the SAT standards, may submit a written appeal to the FAO. Students can submit written appeals to the FAO and if there is a time constraint on the submission, students will be informed through the notification letter mailed to them.
Exceptional circumstances are determined through the use of professional judgment. Some examples may include a student who became very ill during the semester, a student who was severely injured, or the death of a student’s relative.
