SEED

SEED is a registered student group at the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center and the Associated Students of the University of Utah.  Our service group focuses on education about sustainability, which is the search for balance between economy, society and the environment.  In other words, “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Vision

The University, as an institution, should set an example not only for its students, but also for the community, state, and nation.  By demonstrating socially, economically, and environmentally responsible practices and good stewardship, the University will be acting as a conscientious citizen.

SEED has two primary focuses:

1. SEED is part of a movement to transform the University of Utah into a more sustainable campus.  Through the Sustainable Campus Initiative, we aim to unite the energy and interest on campus and in the community toward fostering a more sustainable society.  Numerous projects on campus, such as renewable energy procurement and the campus recycling revitalization, would benefit from more extensive networking.  Through a series of forums we will support the generation of policy, communication, and specific projects.  Expected outcomes from these discussions would be a refined understanding of the University’s needs and a plan of action for how to progress towards a more sustainable campus.

2. Creating sustainable environments begins with how we understand our interaction with the land.  By building community gardens, such as the ones recently established at the Realms of Inquiry School, students learn about sustainable environments as they help the garden grow.  Through this project, we are creating educational links between learning and the natural landscape. By formulating lesson plans specific to kindergarten through twelfth grade, our goal is to provide the educational tools to make the garden an integral part of the school curriculum.

Upcoming Events

Involvement

SEED meets weekly for planning meetings and activities.  As a student based group, we welcome as much input and creative energy from volunteers as can be found!  Please join us this year as we work the soil, share ideas, and set the Sustainable Campus Initiative in motion!
