Events

Spanish-English Translation: Translate for Oquirrh Hills Elementary School's literacy night from 7-8pm on 2/4. Each grade level Kindergarten-Sixth, will meet with parents and seven interpreters are needed. No Frills Conference: Volunteers are needed to help with RHA's ‘No Frills’ Conference taking place 2/12-2/15. Volunteers will help as drivers and greeters (to the airport and at the baggage claim), to help with set up, registration, hospitality, and more! Safe Kids Fair: Volunteers are needed at the South Towne Expo (9575 S State St) 2/25-2/27 for the largest safety fair in the state. Duties include setting up booths, bike rodeo, wearing/spotting for character costumes; entry counters; and more. Contact Amy at adastrup@slco.org or 801-313-6684.

Diabetes Expo 2010: Volunteers are needed to help on 2/27 from 8:30am-12:30pm or 12:00pm-4:00pm with the Diabetes Expo 2010, dedicated to diabetes, healthy eating and active living. MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan): MEChA, a national student organization that helps students help the community, is coordinating a high school conference in the U's Olpin Union Building on 3/3 from 9am-1pm to help students learn about higher education, including scholarships, financial aid, college life, etc. Volunteers are needed to help give students directions, monitor the hallways and help post signs. Student Recruitment: Student Recruitment needs volunteers for 3/4 from 8:45-11:30am. There are students visiting campus and going on tours that day and Student Affairs is looking for some help to walk the students to the different parts of campus. They need as many as 15 tour guides. LGBTQ March: E21 is looking for volunteers to help with planning a march/rally in Salt Lake City on 3/20. The event will be an affirmation of equality for LGBTQ Americans. Contact Jamie at hinderjm@gmail.com.

Anne Frank Exhibit: The Anne Frank exhibit is coming to Salt Lake in April 2010. Be trained as a docent and talk to the public about the exhibit. Three hour shifts required. Contact Abby at abby.gottsegen@comcast.net.

Special Projects

ESL Tutoring: Help a woman from Nepal study to be a CNA. She has decent English skills and has completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, but was unable to pass the certification exam, as she struggled with understanding what the exam questions were asking and has very little experience working on a computer. Healing Hands for Haiti: Helping Hands for Haiti has been committed to bringing rehabilitation to injured Haitians for the last 12 years. The organization is working hard to bring funds and volunteers to the country to help with Earthquake relief. Visit www.helpinghandsforhaiti.org for more info.

Camp Hobé: Camp Hobé needs volunteers during its annual 2-week summer camp program for children who are being treated for cancer and their siblings. Some students receive college credit. Click here to view a brochure about the camp and click here for more information about volunteering.

Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts: Help Mestizo Arts raise $5 million for the first art institute and museum on Salt Lake City's west side. The Off Broadway Theatre: Assist with ticket sales, concessions, ushering and more! Experienced volunteers will have opportunities to work as stage hands, lighting and sound technicians, taking shows on the road to perform at hospitals, schools, camps for children with disabilities, etc. Volunteers must commit to working at least two, four and a half-hour shifts each month. Shifts are from 6:30-11:00pm on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Volunteers will receive one free pass for two to an OBT show or Laughing Stock performance for every two shifts worked. Health & Ability

United Kids Center: A new Child Care Center has recently opened in SLC that provides care for refugee children mostly from Africa and Burma. Coventry Independent and Assisted Living: The Coventry needs volunteers to help with events, programs and classes, and may also teach or perform for residents living in the center. Call 801-943-3909.

Intermountain Hospice:Individuals with flexible schedules are needed to provide respite care while working with patients and their families. Enjoy personal growth while enriching the lives of others. Superior Hospice: Bring connection and companionship to hospice patients. Superior Hospice provides extensive training and support to prepare volunteers to be genuine healing presences in the lives of patients and their caregivers. Apply online here or call Richard at 801-254-3200.

Environment & Science

Swaner EcoCenter: From 2/2-2/12, volunteers are needed to lead groups of fifth graders as they track animals in the snow, dig snow pits, learn about winter wildlife adaptations, and more. Contact Savannah at 435-252-3583 or Savannah@SwanerEcoCenter.org.

Social Justice

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: Answer calls and schedule people for tax appointments. Volunteers are needed to help one night a week from 4-8pm from January 15-February 28 and April 1–April 15. Training is provided. Click here for more info. Contact Haley at 801-887-1229.

Kaiizen Organization: Take a weekend trip to Mexico to help orphans. The Kaiizen organization has been around since 2004 and is now trying to reach a larger audience base for volunteers. Contact Cabrina at 615-727-2778 or Cabrinaminson@gmail.com.

Judge Memorial Homework Lab: Tutor students struggling in subjects like math, science (specifically chemistry and physics), and Spanish. Homework Lab runs Monday-Thursday from 3-5pm, except when there is a special schedule (ie, finals week). Judge is located at 650 S 1100 E Contact Bernadette at bbell@judgememorial.com.

Counting to One Million: Bring math awareness to the public through media coverage, the Internet and dialogue. Volunteers contact schools, arrange for counters, ask business for financial support and more! Contact Sarah Jean at SarahJean.Hoggan@utah.edu.

Tutoring: Help children in Reading and Math at Wasatch Elementary. Minimum of two 30-minute visits per week required. Contact Galen 801-328-2908.

Salt Lake County 4-H Community Clubs: Participate in one-to-one mentoring and coordinate activities for youth ages 10-14 at Kearns Junior High. Contact Holly at the USU Extension at 801-300-5358 or h.martin0613@yahoo.com.

Tutoring: A mother of 4 recently moved with her family into the Salt Lake Area. The Salt Lake City School District is looking to find two volunteers to visit the house 2 times a week for 4 weeks to read to the children. Contact Jon at jon.pezely@slc.k12.ut.us.

The Boys & Girls Club of Midvale: Tutor small study groups with youth on subjects you are comfortable with. The Boys & Girls Club homework hour needs tutors between 3-4pm. Dual Immersion Academy: Help with the S.T.A.R reading program. Volunteers read with the students from the Dual Immersion Academy who need one-on-one practice and encouragement. Job Opportunities with Non-Profits

The Ouelessebougou Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Salt Lake City that assists villagers in the rural region of Ouelessebougou (Way-less-ay-boo-goo) in Mali, West Africa. Established in 1986, the Alliance works in partnership with villagers to find sustainable health, education, and economic development solutions to the problems associated with extreme poverty.

The Ouelessebougou Alliance is looking for a part-time employee with accounting, office management and database experience to work in a small non-profit office in downtown Salt Lake City. The perfect candidate will also have an interest in event planning and an aptitude for interpersonal skills. Click here for more info.
