Community Composting: Help the Drake Family Goat Farm build a compost this Friday, November 13, from 1-6pm. The Drake FAmily Goat Farm is located at 7400 S. Redwood Road. For more info, contact Chris at 801-808-5827.
Girls on the Run 5K: Support this fun, effective program benefiting underprivileged girls. Girls on the Run combines health and wellness lessons with running, and culminates in a 5K that for most is a first-of-its-kind achievement. They are hosting a 5K November 21. Volunteer to help day-of or run the race with your family and friends. For more info, click here.
Special Projects
Tutoring: Tutor a 12 year old boy in 7th grade. He struggles with Math, Reading, and Writing. For more info or to volunteer, contact Shauntay at shauntayramsey@yahoo.com.
The Off Broadway Theatre: Assist OBT at the with ticket sales, concessions, ushering, and more! Experienced volunteers will have exciting opportunities to work as stage hands, lighting and sound technicians, taking shows on the road to perform at hospitals, schools, camps for children with disabilities, etc. Volunteers must commit to working at least two, four and a half-hour shifts each month. Shifts are from 6:30-11:00pm on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. In appreciation for their service, volunteers will receive one free pass for two to an OBT show or Laughing Stock performance for every two shifts they work. Rehabilitation: A student in or someone with experience in exercise physiology is needed to help an individual in the Kearns area who is recovering from a serious back surgery. It would only take 30-60 minutes a week and he especially needs help with core exercises. Contact Dr. Burnham at 801-278-3483 or lee@leeburnham.com.
Gardening: Help two elderly, physically disabled women with their yard and garden work before Fall kicks in. This is a great opportunity for students, as the two women live very close to campus. For more information, page Jann at 801-339-7135.
In-Home Care: Volunteers are needed to take a 59 year old woman with progressive M.S. on bi-monthly field trips. She is mentally alert and fun to be with. She lives in Federal Heights care facility (41 South 900 East) where there is a bus stop right outside with wheelchair accessible busses. She uses a very manageable manual wheelchair. Trips are an easy affair but it takes 2 people to get her onto a bus. Volunteers are also needed to help with writing projects. Contact Claudia at 801-599-1454 or Clint at 801-891-0999.
In-Home Care: Help care for two boys, ages 7 and 9 who have Duschene M.D. Their family needs a volunteer from 7:30-8:30pm each night to not only help care for the boys but to act as role models, mentors and friends to them. Data Entry for a Senior Citizen: Help Fred Buchanan (retired faculty of the U's College of Education) work on the history of a relative who as an original regent of the University of Deseret. He has Parkinson's disease and would like to have a volunteer help him enter information into the computer. Contact Fred at 801-485-8019.

Intermountain Hospice: Be a Hospice Volunteer. Individuals with flexible schedules are needed to provide respite care while working with patients and their families. Inspiration Hospice: Hospice volunteers are ordinary people of all ages with extraordinary love and a common bond: concern for others. Volunteers are needed to touch lives through many special ways. Training is provided Contact Linda at 801-281-1314.
Environment & Science
Swaner EcoCenter: Become an EcoHost. In order for the EcoCenter to be open on a regular basis, they need volunteers to serve as EcoHosts. EcoHosts will give tours, interpret exhibits and work at the front desk. Hours are currently weekday afternoons, but may expand to some weekend hours. Training sessions start soon. Social Justice
2-1-1 Information and Referral: Help take calls at 2-1-1 Information and Referral. 2-1-1 schedules appointments for The Salvation Army’s Toys for Tots and Angel Tree program. LGBTQ March: E21 is looking for volunteers to help with planning a march/rally in Salt Lake City on March 20, 2010. The event will be an affirmation of equality for LGBTQ Americans. Contact Jamie at hinderjm@gmail.com.
Kaiizen Organization: Take a weekend trip to Mexico to help Orphans. The Kaiizen organization has been around since 2004 and is now trying to reach a larger audience base for volunteers. The Boys & Girls Club of Midvale: Tutor small study groups with youth on subjects you are comfortable with. The Boys & Girls Club homework hour needs tutors between 3-4pm. Dual Immersion Academy: Help with the S.T.A.R reading program. Volunteers read with the students from the Dual Immersion Academy who need one-on-one practice and encouragement. West High: Tutor and mentor students learning basic math skills. Many are recent immigrants and refugees working hard to understand and catch up. You don't have to be a math genius to do this and you can be any age! Just bring your desire to help, your patience, and caring. Scheduling is during the school day. Rolling Meadows Meadows Elementary: Volunteer with the S.T.A.R. Program, a tutorial program sponsored by the Utah State Office of Education and helps children improve their reading skills. Training is provided. Contact Jolene, Shanna or Michelle at 801-646-4990.

Reach Out and Read: Promote literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care. Volunteers read to children, model book-sharing techniques for parents and show to them that reading is fun.
