Tutor Communication

Tutor - Teacher Communication

Tutors can play a vital role in encouraging a child's education. As a role model and personal assistant, your on-going support can help lead a child to great success. However, we must remember that the child's teacher is ultimately responsible for the child’s education. Therefore communication between tutor and teacher is extremely important. This does not take long, but it is often a critical overlooked step.

  • Know the teacher's goals for a child and the teaching language used in the classroom.
  • Reinforcing skills taught in the classroom will avoid confusion and help your student succeed sooner.
  • Talk to the teacher about the child's strengths and weaknesses, what they are learning about or how reading miscues are prompted in class.
  • Touch base with the teacher often to share observations of the child or ask questions about the child or about learning in the classroom.
  • Be courteous and try to catch the teacher when he or she doesn’t look to busy or is in the middle of a lesson. If this is difficult, request the assistance of the school supervisor to help arrange a meeting time or leave a note in his/her box.
Remember - teachers are highly trained professionals who can be very helpful, but sometimes they forget that not everyone knows their students as well as they do. If the teacher doesn't reach out to you, take the initiative yourself. They will appreciate the interest and admire your desire to assist the child the best way possible.
