Frequently Asked Questions
Is Federal Work-Study award required to become a tutor?
As a paid America Reads or America Counts tutor, you must have been awarded Work-Study. However, volunteers are also needed. The Bennion Center also sponsors many student-directed volunteer programs at several schools in Salt Lake City.
When and where do tutors work?
Tutors arrange a schedule with the school supervisor around their class schedule. Tutoring generally occurs during school hours and in after-school programs at one of our School Partners in Salt Lake City. Occasional evening or weekend opportunities are available for special events. See school partners for details.
Which children will I work with?
Tutors are matched with children who are in need of extra support. Tutors work with the same children throughout the semester or the school year, developing a strong, mentoring relationship.
Do I need to speak a second language?
No. If a tutor does have second language skills, they are usually partnered with children who would benefit from their expertise. However, being proficient with only English is great.
