Tip of the Month

Reading With Your Student 1. Be sure to use at least some books that are "easy" for your students to read. If the book is too difficult for your student, try an easier one, then progressively move up another level. 2. Dont be afraid to have a little fun-find the silliest books and laugh together. 3. Sit beside your student, not across the table. But remember to respect their space. 4. Teach your student how to pick a book they’ll like, and allow your student to choose what they want to read. 5. Always introduce the book to the student before reading the book. Do a book walk!

The America Reads Challenge
at the U of U

Introduction

The goal of America Reads is to ensure that every American child can read well and independently by the end of the third grade. The University of Utah is one of over 1,100 institutions of higher education to participate in the challenge. The U of U is part of a collaboration of other institutions which work together to implement the America Reads mission into the Salt Lake Valley.

University of Utah - Bennion Center

Federal work-study recipients work in a one-on-one basis with the children, twice a week, to engage in enjoyable reading activities to help them feel successful by providing positive feedback and support. By joining the America Reads program, you will have a meaningful and fun experience as you gain skills and knowledge necessary for a future career. Join America Reads today and become the ideal role model these children need!
