Appropriate courses to take before you leave:

  • Intellectual Exploration
  • Writing
  • American Institutions
  • Electives
  • Diversity
  • Educational Psychology 2600:(Strategies for College Success)
  • Non-sequential major courses

Be careful about taking:

  • The first semester of sequenced courses such as languages, math, physics, chemistry, or similar subjects
  • Courses which are pre-requisites for courses you plan to take when you return (i.e. math)
  • If you do take math or other sequenced courses before you leave, be prepared to repeat the last course you took upon your return to the University.

Things to do before you leave the University:

  • Obtain your DARS (Degree Audit Report) from the web (http://www.acs.utah.edu/student/) and meet with your academic advisor (contact the department if you have chosen a major, or University College (581-8146) if you have not yet decided on a major).
  • Make sure you understand what courses you will need to take for general education and/or your major.
  • If you have any "I" (incomplete) grades, complete these courses before you leave. If you have any questions or concerns about your grades, contact the instructor immediately.
  • If you want a family member or friend to register you for courses before you return, give them your ID number and PIN, and a letter allowing them to act on your behalf.
  • If you have financial aid or a scholarship, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office (105 SSB, 581-6211).
  • If you are participating in an "official assignment" (e.g., Peace Corps, VISTA, church service, military duty) contact the Registrar's Office (250N SSB, 581-8969). You will be required to fill out an Undergraduate Leave of Absence form (www.sa.utah.edu/regist/handbook/leave.htm) and submit a copy of your official letter of assignment.

Things to do upon your return:

  • If you are not back in time to attend classes from the beginning of the term, consider waiting until the following term.
  • Contact the Admissions Office to see if you are eligible to register or if you need to reactivate your record.
  • Obtain your DARS and meet with your advisor to review general education and/or major requirements.
  • If you took the first semester of sequenced courses before you left, repeat the course when you return.
  • If you had financial aid or a scholarship, contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office.
