Getting Ready Guide 2009-2010

Graduate instruction is offered in community and institutional pharmacy practice, nuclear pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, and pharmaceutical care.The college helps provide pharmacy services at University Hospital, the University Hospital Drug Information Service, and the Utah Poison Control Center.

The University of Utah - Admissions

Admission Criteria: The pharmacy curriculum is divided into approximately 75 semester hours of pre-professional curriculum followed by four years of professional curriculum.  Before admission to professional study, students must complete the pre-professional core courses listed below and most general education requirements.  Applications to the professional program are available in October on-line at www.pharmcas.org or www.pharmacy.utah.edu.  Applications are due in early January.  Students are admitted for Fall semester only.  Admission is highly competitive with 60 students from up to 200 applicants.  A cumulative GPA of 2.75 in the required pre-professional core courses is necessary to be considered for admission.  Historically, the average GPA of those accepted is a 3.5.  Also expected of an applicant is pharmacy experience, community service, and demonstrated leadership.  To be considered for admission, applicants whose first language is not English must receive a minimum composite score of 61 on the TOEFL iBT and a minimum score of 25 on the speaking component of the test.  Students applying must also take the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) with a composite score of 65% or better.  The average composite of those accepted has been the 87-90% for the past few years.  Information regarding the PCAT may be obtained from the University of Utah Testing Center, 801-581-8744 or the website is www.PCATweb.info.

Important Information:  If an applicant is denied admission, they should seek advice from the Admissions coordinator for recommended courses to further prepare them for the following year.

To become a registered pharmacist, a student must graduate from an accredited school or college of pharmacy, complete 1,500 hours of internship requirements, and pass the state board of pharmacy practice and law examinations.

Transferring Courses: The following courses may be taken at College of Eastern Utah to fulfill pre-professional requirements for the U's Pharmacy degree. There are additional courses not offered at CEU that must be taken at the U.

Students may also obtain a letter of completion, which states all general education requirements have been completed. While attending CEU, students may take foreign language credits and/or other transferable electives for the U.
