Domestic Undergraduate Students:
Officially admitted students that have registered for university credit classes with a matriculated status, remain eligible to register for classes for a period of one calendar year from the term of their last enrollment.* For example, an undergraduate student who is registered for credit course(s) during fall semester and who does not register for credit classes in the subsequent spring semester, remains eligible to register for three terms (spring, summer, fall). If the student does not register for credit course(s) and attend during one of those three term, an undergraduate application for admission and an accompanying application fee must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the appropriate deadline to regain eligibility to register. Students residing outside the state of Utah for more than 12 continuous months may be asked to provide documentation of their residency status.
Leave of Absence
Undergraduate degree seeking students are eligible to register for one calendar year from the last term of enrollment. A leave of absence allows undergraduate students who meet specific requirements to extend enrollment eligibility for a total of two years (six academic terms) as provided under Utah Board of Regents policy.
Officially admitted undergraduate students who have registered for and completed university credit class(es) may request a leave of absence for an “official assignment” usually served with a nonprofit or governmental organization and normally without compensation, e.g. military duty, Peace Corps, VISTA, church service.
Leaves will not be approved for medical, personal, or academic emergencies.
International students on a F1 or J1 visa taking a vacation semester must obtain permission from the International Center prior to submitting a Leave of Absence. Leaves for international students will only be approved for one semester.
It is the student’s responsibility to register for the semester following a leave of absence. If he/she needs to extend his/her leave of absence, a new form including the new official letter of assignment must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office. If a student does not register for the returning term indicated on the Undergraduate Leave of Absence form he/she must readmit through the Admissions Office.

Students applying for a leave of absence may also want to visit the University College website for helpful suggestions for course selection and preparing to return to the University.
Students who attend another institution of higher education during the period of
absence must also submit transcripts from all applicable institutions
for credit evaluation and determination of continued admissibility.
Students who have been suspended or are on academic probation must satisfy all terms of the suspension/probation agreement and obtain clearance from University College at the time of their readmission.
* Please note students must register for university credit course(s) and attend the term they are officially accepted to be considered matriculated students at the University of Utah. If a student applied for a term but did not register and attend credit courses during that term, the student will need to reapply to the university to be considered for a future term.
Domestic Graduate Students:
Graduate students are required to maintain continuous registration and must
acquire permission from their graduate department for a "leave of absence" before
leaving the University. A graduate student who fails to register for
a term (excluding summer terms) is immediately made ineligible to register
for future terms.
The student must reapply for admission to graduate studies at the University. A completed graduate admissions application and fee must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the appropriate term deadline. The student should also contact their academic department regarding their readmission to the department's academic program.
Application Deadlines
| Fall Semester | April 1 |
| Spring Semester | November 1 |
| Summer Term | March 15 |
Graduate students may postpone their studies for up to one year. The request must be approved by the student's supervisory committee and the Dean of The Graduate School.
