Non-Matriculated Student (one who has not been formally admitted to work for a degree)
Permission to Register - Students taking classes for credit must be officially admitted to the University of Utah as a matriculated student or be given permission to register as a non-matriculated student through the University of Utah Admissions Office.
To be eligible as a Non-Matriculated Student, applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school at least three years prior to making application or have reached their 21st birthday prior to the semester for which they are making application. Students under the age of 21 who have graduated from an accredited high school at least three years prior to making application must provide verification of high school graduation or provide GED exam scores. (A composite GED score of 550 with no individual score below 500 is required.) International students are not eligible for Non-Matriculated Student status.
Applicants who have attended another college or university must be in good standing and eligible to return to the last school they attended and meet the University of Utah transfer GPA requirement of 2.6.
Students apply for non-matriculated status by filling out and indicating Non-Matriculated on the Undergraduate Application and sending the application to the Admissions Office by the appropriate deadline. A $35 processing fee must be included with the application. We do not require transcripts unless the student is under the age of 21 and must verify date of graduation.
Deadlines and Fees - Applications are normally filed from three months to nine months prior to the semester for which admission is desired. The following are deadlines for filing applications. When the date listed below falls on a weekend, no late handling fees are assessed on applications received the Monday following the deadline.
| Fall Semester | April 1 |
| Spring Semester | November 1 |
| Summer Term | March 15 |
A $35 processing fee is required with all applications. Applications submitted after the deadlines will be accepted with an additional $25 late handling fee until the final cut off date. Final cut off dates will be posted on the Admissions Office web site at http://www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/ each semester. Fees are non-refundable. Admission requirements, deadlines and fees are subject to change without prior notice. Applications are reviewed to determine if the student meets the non-matriculated status requirements and if the student is a resident or nonresident for tuition purposes.
Students will receive Information about their resident status and registration once permission to register has been granted. If the student does not register for the term permission is approved, the student will have to submit another application and fee to be considered for a subsequent semester. After the non-matriculated student attends the University of Utah, the student may continue to register for classes each term as long as the student stays in good standing at the University or until the student does not register for a Fall or Spring semester. A new application and fee can be submitted for a subsequent semester if a term is skipped.
Credit earned as a non-matriculated student will be applied toward a degree at the University of Utah only when you become a matriculated (degree-seeking) student. A maximum of 30 semester hours of credit earned as a non-matriculated student may be considered toward an undergraduate degree. Nine hours of graduate credit may be considered toward an advanced degree.
Non-Matriculated students are NOT eligible for Financial Aid or Scholarships.
Summer Only: For the summer term, we offer a Summer Only Non-Matriculated status for students who are enrolled at another University or College and want to take classes to be transferred back to their institutions. These students do not have to meet the requirements for Non-Matriculated status but must have completed at least one term at their institution and be in good standing. We do not require that transcripts be sent from their institution. Summer Only students will only be allowed to take classes during the summer term. When filling out the undergraduate application please check the Non-Matriculated status and write in Summer Only. The application must be received by March 15 with the $35 processing fee. Applications submitted after the deadlines will be accepted with an additional $25 late handling fee until the final cut off date. International Students are not eligible for the Summer Only status.
