Western Undergraduate Exchange

The University participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), a program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) and other western states. Through WUE, nonresident students may enroll at the University in designated programs and pay 150 percent of the resident tuition (plus other fees paid by all students). Students who have received a bachelors degree are not eligible for the WUE program at the University of Utah.  Because the University participates in WUE, residents of Utah may enroll under the same terms in designated institutions and programs in other participating states.

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program through which students from the 15 participating states may enroll in designated 2-year and 4-year institutions. States participating in the Western Undergraduate Exchange in 2005-2006 are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Each state determines which institutions and programs it will make available for the WUE program. The University of Utah has restricted areas of study, not available to students who enroll and pay the reduced tuition as a WUE student. The restricted areas include the following: Allied Health (Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy), Art, Business (Including all areas that fall under the business program such as: Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing), Communication, Communication Disorders, Computer Science, Education (Elementary, Secondary, Special), and Psychology.

Program requirements include:

  1. Accepted as a matriculated (degree seeking) student at the University of Utah.
  2. Legal resident of one of the15 participating states.
  3. A non-restricted area of study.
  4. Time enrolled as a WUE student may NOT count toward the state of Utah residency requirements. Please see www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/resInstruct.htm for further information on the residency requirements for tuition purposes.
  5. The WUE program is only for those students seeking their first bachelors degree.

Procedure to apply:

  1. Follow the application procedures listed on the Application for Undergraduate Admissions. Students must be admitted as matriculated students to the University to be considered for the WUE program.
  2. Write “WUE” at the top, or in the comment section of the undergraduate application.
  3. Return the application to University of Utah Admissions Office 201 S 1460 E Rm. 250 S, Salt Lake City UT 84112, by the appropriate deadline.
  4. If you have already applied and been accepted, give us a written request notifying us that you wish to participate in the WUE program. The request must list the state you are from, your major, and your name and Social Security number.

The University of Utah has a limited number of spaces available for the WUE program. You will be placed on a waiting list for the semester indicated on your application or written request. When a position becomes available, the Admissions Office will contact you, either by phone or mail to verify you are still interested in the program and you are in a non-restricted major. If space is not available for the semester you requested, we will keep your name on the waiting list as long as you are enrolled in classes at the University of Utah (students do not need to be enrolled summer term).

Information about WUE programs at the University of Utah is available from the Admissions Office. Utah residents may obtain information about WUE programs in other states from the Certifying Officer for the Utah WICHE Student Exchange Program, Utah Board of Regents, Board of Regents Bldg., The Gateway
