PRIVATE DONORS

General Information | Tuition Due Dates | Mailing Instrucitons | Co-Payable Checks | Scholarships Checks Sent Directly to the Student | Releasing Grades to Private Donors

General Information:

Private scholarships are provided by organizations outside the University.  The organization or donor selects the recipient and sends the funds to the University of Utah in behalf of the recipient.  When the donor does not specify how to disburse scholarship funds, the scholarships office will divide awards equally between fall and spring semesters.  Private scholarships of less than $900 are credited in full to the current semester charges, unless otherwise instructed by the donor.

Funds will not be released, unless a student is enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours).  If a student enrolls for less than full-time, the scholarships office requires written authorization from the donor before funds will be released.  In case of non-enrollment, scholarship funds are returned to the donor.(Return toTop of Page)

Tuition Due Dates:

Funds provided by organizations outside the University of Utah must arrive at least one month prior to the tuition due date.  Funds arriving after that date will be processed as quickly as possible, but students are responsible to pay all tuition and fee charges, including late fees, if processing does not occur in time.  Classes will not be held to facilitate late arrival of funds.  (In case scholarship funds do not arrive in time to pay tuition and fees, students may want to apply for a short-term loan at the Income Accounting Office.)(Return toTop of Page)

Co-Payable Checks:

When a donor issues a check co-payable to a student and the University of Utah, the student must come to the financial aid office to endorse the check before a credit can be applied to the student’s tuition bill, which may cause unnecessary delays.  To process scholarships in a timely manner, donors should make checks payable to the University of Utah, in the student’s behalf.(Return toTop of Page)

Scholarship Checks Sent Directly to the Student:

Scholarship checks made out to the University of Utah but mailed to the student must be delivered or forwarded, with a cover letter, to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at the University of Utah.(Return toTop of Page)

Releasing Grades to Private Donors:

The 1974 Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act requires that the University obtain a written release from enrolled students before disclosing information.  Thus, the scholarships office at the University of Utah must have the student’s signed approval before releasing grades and/or financial information to private scholarship donors.  Please contact the scholarships office to sign a release of information.  However, when a student fails to meet established reasonable academic progress standards (SAT), the University will notify the donor and discuss how the scholarship should be handled.  The University will return scholarship funds to the donor, upon donor request.  Otherwise, we must have authorization from the donor before funds will be released.(Return toTop of Page)
